AI can explain code, find the mistake in your working and come up with more problems to practise on. But you have to be able to handle the code and the maths yourself; you won't have AI in the exam. Prompts for code, maths, projects and exams. As of 26 October 2026.
🛡️ Safety net: what AI doesn't do in engineering and IT
How universities handle AI and what doesn't belong in it in general is on the university page. Here's what applies on top of that in engineering and IT.
⚠️ Watch out for this
You have to be able to explain and change code from AI. According to the Czech Technical University, the student is the author of the code and must be able to write the same program without AI. Homework, exams and tests are done there without AI unless the teacher says otherwise.
AI gets numbers, units and signs wrong and presents the result confidently. Check a calculation by substituting back, with a calculator or with a short script.
Code from AI can contain bugs and security holes even when it works. Run it and test it before you hand it in.
Passwords, API keys and code from the company where you're an intern don't belong in AI unless the company explicitly allows it.
📚 Where to check
The official documentation of the language or library, such as the Python documentation. AI often knows older versions of libraries.
Your faculty's course notes and problem collections.
Git and working with an AI agent in your editor are covered in the guides GitHub and Cursor.
💻 Code
AI explains and gives hints, you do the fixing. That's how you learn the most.
Explain the code to me line by lineClaudeChatGPTGemini
<code>
[paste the code]
</code>
I [got this code from my teacher / had it written by AI / found it in a textbook] and I have to be able to explain it. I'm in year [2], the language is [Python].
1. Say in one sentence what the code does as a whole.
2. Go through it block by block: what each block does and why it's written exactly this way.
3. Find the places where it could break (empty input, large numbers, a missing file).
4. Ask me 5 questions a teacher could ask me about this code. Show the answers only after I respond.
Find the bug, but don't fix it for meClaudeChatGPT
<code>
[paste the code]
</code>
<error>
[paste the error message or describe what the program does wrong]
</error>
I want to find the bug myself. Help me with hints at three levels:
1. Where to look (a function or part of the code).
2. What to look at (a variable, a condition, a loop).
3. What's wrong.
Give me the next level only when I ask for it. Write the fixed code only when I write "show the solution".
Tests for my codeClaudeChatGPTGemini
<code>
[paste the function]
</code>
Suggest tests for this function in [pytest / JUnit]: normal cases, edge values and invalid input. For each test, say in one sentence what it checks.
Don't change the function's code. If the tests reveal a bug, describe it, but leave the fix to me.
Code review of a term projectClaudeChatGPT
<project>
[paste the code or the project's main files]
</project>
You're a teacher marking a term project in [Programming 2]. Go through the code and write:
- What's good.
- Bugs and places where the program could break, ordered from the most serious.
- Readability: names, length of functions, repeated code.
- Security: passwords in the code, unchecked input.
For each comment, give the file and line. Don't rewrite the code, I want to fix it myself.
🧮 Maths and calculations
AI checks your working and writes a script that verifies the result. Leave the calculating itself to yourself and to the program. Solving an ordinary problem step by step is in the guide Students.
Checking my workingClaudeChatGPTGemini
You can take a photo of your working on paper and upload it.
<problem>
[paste the problem]
</problem>
<my_working>
[paste your working step by step]
</my_working>
Check my working, not just the result. Find the first step with a mistake and explain why it's wrong. Don't calculate the rest for me.
If the working is correct, say so and check the result by substituting it back.
Verify my result with a scriptClaudeChatGPT
I've calculated [a definite integral / a system of equations / the deflection of a beam]. The problem and my result: [paste].
Write me a short Python script ([NumPy / SymPy / SciPy]) that verifies the result independently, numerically or symbolically. Add a comment to each line saying what it does.
Don't calculate the result yourself. I'll run the script and compare the results.
Practice problems based on an old exam paperChatGPTClaudeGemini
<exam>
[paste an old exam paper or sample problems]
</exam>
Create 5 new problems of the same type and difficulty with different numbers. Put the answers at the very end, separated, so I don't see them in advance.
For each answer, show the working and a check by substituting back. If a problem doesn't come out nicely, choose different numbers.
A concept I don't understandClaudeChatGPTGrok
I don't understand [the Fourier transform / recursion / eigenvalues of a matrix].
1. First explain it without formulas, by comparing it to something everyday.
2. Then show the formula and explain what each part of it means.
3. Give me one simple example I can work out by hand.
4. Ask me 3 questions that will show whether I understand it.
Also tell me where the comparison stops working.
🎓 Exams
Practice before the exam. AI has no place in the exam itself.
A quiz on algorithm complexityClaudeChatGPTGemini
Quiz me on [algorithms and data structures]. Give me a short piece of code or a description of an algorithm and I'll give its time and space complexity and why.
After each answer, tell me whether it's right, and if not, where my reasoning went wrong. Ask one question at a time.
After 6 questions, sum up what I struggle with and recommend what to review.
