AI slop: buried in careless AI content
Wherever you look, there's a song, an article, an image or an app “made with AI”. Most of them look the same and half of them don't work. Why that happens and how not to do it.
It's everywhere
AI slop is the word for careless content made with AI. Things made quickly, in bulk and without care. And it's everywhere: songs, lyrics, articles, images, videos, websites and apps.
Everyone who first touches AI feels for a while like they've discovered America. They write one sentence, get a finished song or website and release it straight away. But millions of people are doing the same thing right now. Often without understanding the topic, so the result is full of mistakes and loose ends.
And mostly it already exists, in better quality. An article that retells what's in first place in search. An app that does the same as ten others, only worse. A song that sounds like a thousand others from the same prompt.
Why it all looks the same
AI gives you what's most common. Without your own brief and your own taste, the same patterns keep appearing:
- Websites and apps: the same intro with a big headline and two buttons, the same purple-blue gradient, the same cards with an icon and three sentences.
- Texts: “In today's fast-paced world…”, bullet points with emoji, words like revolutionary and game-changing, and at the end a summary of what was already said once.
- Images: the same glossy, overlit style and faces as if from one template.
- Music: a generic chorus, no story and a sound that blurs together after a few listens.
How to avoid it
AI is an amplifier. Put little into it and you get average. Put yourself into it and you get something that isn't anywhere else.
- First check whether it already exists. If it does and it's better, either don't do it, or bring something that's missing there.
- Bring something of your own. Your own experience, your own data, humour, local context. For me it's things like Czech vocals in Suno or a video app that the market was missing.
- Understand what you're doing. AI won't replace knowing the topic. When you don't understand the topic, you won't spot the mistakes it made either.
- Finish it. Go through the mistakes, check the facts, try the app on another computer, listen to the song on several devices. The first 80% is free today; the remaining 20% makes the difference.
- Avoid the patterns. Tell the AI what it should look like and what it shouldn't. Delete generic sentences and emoji that do nothing there.
- Less is more. One good thing is better than ten average ones.
- Put your name on it and stand behind it. What you don't want to sign with your name, don't release.
Prompts that help
For the text and the look. For a website, an app or an image, attach a screenshot.
Assess my [article / song lyrics / website / app / image]. Text: [paste the text, or write “no text”] Look: [screenshot attached / no image] Look at it strictly and find: 1. generic sentences that could appear in any text on the same topic, 2. phrases and patterns typical of AI (empty intros, bullet points with emoji, words like revolutionary or game-changing, a needless summary at the end), 3. a template look: the same purple-blue gradient, an intro with a big headline and two buttons, cards with an icon and three sentences, a glossy overlit image style, 4. claims without a source or numbers that can't be checked, 5. places where something of your own is missing: experience, an example, an opinion, your own style. For each finding, say why and suggest how to make it more specific and more your own. If it's fine, say so straight away and don't invent mistakes.
Use an AI that can search the web.
I want to make [an app / a website / an article / a video series]: [a description in 2–3 sentences]. Search the web for whether something similar already exists. List at most the 5 closest things with a link and one sentence on what they do well and what they're missing. Then tell me what my version would have to have on top to make sense. If you find nothing like it, say that too. Give only what you really found, with a link.
What to take away
- AI does the first 80% for you. The remaining 20% is what quality depends on, and that's on you.
- Bring something of your own, otherwise you're just adding another copy.
- Release only what you'd happily put your name to.
